Area information :

The city has preserved it's medieval appearance with narrow streets and little squares. On hot summer days you can cool down between its old walls and enjoy endless walks in the evenings. Because of its unique location the town resembles a large open-air museum with medieval architecture and a rich cultural heritage. On many houses you will see the sign of the lion in memory of the Venetians who governed Piran at the end of the 13th century.
The greatest attraction is the Venetian red house from the middle of the 15th century on Tartini square.

Among the many churches in Piran there are two remarkable ones - the Cathedral of St. George and St. Madona of Health. The church of St. George is situated on the hill overlooking the city. St. George is the patron saint of Piran. The church was founded in the 12th century and in 17th cenury it got a Venetian campanile and baptistery.

A nice walk across Tartini square towards the cape brings you to the church of St. Madona with its round tower. Tartin square has been the centre of the town since the end of the 13th century. It is named after the famous composer and violinist Giuseppe Tartini, who was born in 1692 in the house near the square, known as Tartini house. For the 200th anniversary of Tartini's birth, the Venetian artist Antonio dal Zotto created the bigger-than-life bronze statue of the ''maestro'' in 1896. The statue dominates the square, which is the cultural and government centre of the town. Besides historical buildings surrounding the square you can find the post office, the bank and many shops and restaurants.
